The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Matteo's Surprising Comeback
At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
