Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
