Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
