The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
